From Workshop to Garden

Elm-magpie began as a side project in a garage, where the founder spent weekends building planters for friends who complained about flimsy garden store options. Word spread through neighbourhood gardening groups, and soon strangers were knocking on the door asking for custom work.

What started as a hobby became a focused craft. We studied traditional woodworking techniques, researched which materials held up best against Canadian weather, and tested drainage systems until we found configurations that kept plants thriving.

Today, our small team operates from a proper workshop space, though the philosophy remains unchanged: build each planter as if it will hold your own plants. No shortcuts, no cheap materials, no designs that prioritize appearance over function.

What We Believe

Principles that guide every decision in our workshop

Built to Last

We select materials and construction methods that ensure longevity. A planter should outlive the plants it holds many times over, not end up in a landfill after one season.

Sustainable Practice

We prioritize reclaimed wood when possible and source new lumber from certified sustainable forests. Scraps become kindling, sawdust goes to local farms for composting.

Direct Relationships

We work directly with customers to understand their needs. No middlemen, no guessing. When you contact us, you reach someone who actually builds planters.

Climate Awareness

Every design considers temperature extremes, moisture levels, and UV exposure specific to Canadian conditions. Generic imported planters cannot offer this focus.

Our Materials

Western red cedar forms the backbone of most planters. This wood naturally resists rot and insects without chemical treatment. Its tight grain repels moisture while allowing the wood to breathe, preventing the kind of trapped humidity that destroys lesser containers.

For accent pieces and premium orders, we work with reclaimed Douglas fir, salvaged hardwoods, and occasionally specialty imports like teak for customers who want something exceptional.

All hardware is marine-grade stainless steel. Brass screws appear on visible surfaces where customers prefer the aesthetic. We never use galvanized fasteners that will eventually rust and stain the wood.
